About VIN Decoders
VIN Decoders is a free VIN decoder and buyer's guide for people buying used cars in Australia and New Zealand.
How the free decoder works
The decode runs in your browser. It reads the VIN structure defined by ISO 3779 and ISO 3780, looks up the manufacturer code in our WMI list (based on the Wikibooks list of world manufacturer identifiers, CC BY-SA 4.0) and asks the public NHTSA vPIC service for the specification. NHTSA mainly covers vehicles sold in the United States, so for most Australian and NZ cars the decode is limited to what the VIN itself encodes.

Privacy
- We use no analytics and no advertising cookies.
- When you decode, the VIN is sent to the NHTSA vPIC service to look up specifications.
- When you choose to check the history, the VIN is passed to carVertical through our affiliate link.
- Your recent VINs are kept only in your own browser for 30 days, so you can pick them again; you can clear the list under the VIN field.
